THE CREW
-
KEVIN BOON
Kevin is a guitar player, singer, who loves jamming to great rock and roll, folk, country and other genres. He is a wannabe songwriter who has penned a few tunes of his own. He moved to Mahone Bay from Ontario two years ago and enjoys the east coast lifestyle and the people. He knew nothing about sea shanties when he joined the Shantymen, but immediately connected to the spirit and history of the songs. He brings a tenor range and especially enjoys creating the harmony sounds with the Shantymen.
-
MIKE BRISCOE
Mike traditionally a hiking and cycling enthusiast is now discovering the beauty of the sea and shanties. A step out of character and a shock to family and friends he became one of the original Shantymen. For a retired gardener it was a big step into a new world filled with jibs, spankers, sheets, halyards, and capstans. He contributes not only a baritone / tenor voice but also a rustic barn, that makes for the best place to rehearse.
-
DAVID CONOLLY
David’s family roots are in Cape Breton, and he spent his summers growing up on the shore of South Bay, Ingonish Beach. He learned to sail on a friend’s 41‘ wooden schooner. David is a guitar player and has been with different bands over the years, playing everything from traditional music to rock and singing in the baritone range. He is a semi-retired lawyer and recently became a firefighter in his community.
-
PETER FERGUSON
Peter is one of the group’s strong tenor voices. Originally a seafarer on the rugged north-east of England, Peter marched inland to Ontario for 35 years working in healthcare. The calling of the sea brought Peter and his family out to Nova Scotia's South Shore were he enjoys amongst other things, tall tales and seafaring banter! Bottoms up to the crew’s musical director and star tenor!
-
DAVID FOOTE
On, in, and near water, David keeps a song in his heart. Growing up swimming, sailing, paddling and rowing the lakes in Dartmouth, then sailing in Halifax Harbour as the boats got bigger... A student exchange year revealed a knack for languages that eventually led to further study and work across the country, offshore, and around Africa, Asia and Europe; now, he is retired and living the dream in Martin’s River: “il faut cultiver son jardin…”
-
GARY FOSHAY
A true Bluenoser, having been raised along the southern Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia and growing up roaming beaches and tide pools. Years of experience under sail and time as a professional seaman on ice-breaker/tankers in earlier years. Now a retired Periodontist with little musical experience but enjoying time in recent years with the Shantymen helping fill the sails of baritone parts of sea shanties and songs about our seafaring past.
-
MIRANDA LEVER
Miranda migrated down the South Shore from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in 2014. She came aboard with the Shantymen in 2021 as musical director. That role has recently been passed on to Peter Ferguson. Miranda continues to occasionally support the crew with her accordion. A private music teacher at the Buchanan's House of Music, Miranda can also be found performing as part of the Woolly Jumpers.
-
DONALD MCLENNAN
Donald was born in Halifax many years ago and worked as an ecologist in BC, Ontario and Manitoba. He came back to his homeland in 2022 to be closer to family, friends, sailboats and the ocean. Donald has been singing and banging away on the guitar since his teens and enjoys covering singer songwriters like John Prine (his Patron Saint), Don Henley, Jesse Winchester and many others. He joined the Shantymen in 2024 and has enjoyed the challenge of adding some guitar backup and learning the baritone harmonies.
-
MARK SLOAN
Mark spent 34 years in the Royal Navy, much of it at sea, before retiring and moving to Canada. He has sung in many choirs, has experience of a wide repertoire, and enjoys singing the bass part. “It’s all about the bass!”
-
UWE WITTKUGEL
Uwe is an avid sailor. He was born and raised along the German Baltic Sea coast and immigrated to Canada in 1990. After years of urban life in Toronto, he’s enjoying Canada’s rugged “ocean playground”. Close to retiring from environmental consulting in Europe and Canada, Uwe founded the Shantymen in 2019 and is since coordinating the group’s tacks and jibes. He sings in the baritone and tenor range.

IN MEMORIAM: RAYMOND LEBLANC
In 2023 we unexpectedly lost Raymond. He was among the very first crew members who joined the Shantymen in 2019. Raymond was an exceptionally accomplished ophthalmologist and passionate lover of music, from classic to folk. As Shantyman he was enthusiastically pulling his weight as a powerful bass singer. His endless medical knowledge inevitably made him the “ship doctor” who navigated the crew safely through the turbulent Covid years. We still hear his voice wherever we perform.
